Stephen Ministry Resources

Though training for Stephen ministers is a thoughtfully structured and sequenced discipline, some IRMS resources may provide outside strategies for a care giver's individual study or group discussion. The IRMS collection contains a significant number of resources dealing with depression and suicide, aging and related illness, relationships, divorce, terminal illness, kids on drugs, and the loneliness that major life changes can trigger. LOST AND FOUND: YOUNG PEOPLE TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION (VT4771)
This powerful and diverse video features eight young adults from ages 11 to 20, who discuss the sources, impact and aftermath of depression on their lives. These articulate adolescents describe the effects of their depression on their feelings, actions, conversations and even their choice of clothing. SHATTERED DREAMS: HEALING AFTER DIVORCE (VT4661)
This program assists those who have experienced a divorce in finding emotional and spiritual healing. KNOW THE SCORE: THE DANGERS OF PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS (VT4868)
This program reveals the truth about and the dangers of performance drugs such as steroids, creatine, Human Growth Hormone, diuretics, blood doping hormones and stimulants like ephedrine and amphetamines. Also included is an investigation of so-called "nutritional supplements" that claim to help users lose weight and gain muscle, but in reality can lead to many physical ailments. Speakers include young athletes who emphasize the importance of "competing clean," as well as sports doctors who explain the adverse physical effects of these substances. Caring for an aging parent is an all-encompassing experience that affects every aspect of our lives. Designed to help individuals and families confront change, personal loss, separation, grief and new beginnings, this video introduces the theme that all of life is beginnings and endings. FIERCE GOODBYE: LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF SUICIDE (DV46)
Over four million people a year in the U.S. mourn the tragic suicide deaths of family members. Suicide devastates family members for many years; family survivors are at greater risk of suicide themselves and the pain ripples out to entire communities. In this DVD, family survivors reveal their intimate stories and aching pain to assist other survivors and to help the broader community understand the unique and terrible grief of suicide. This documentary explores Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Greek Orthodox responses to suicide. The church can be a “healing station” in helping survivors find their way to recovery. AT DEATH'S DOOR: FACING THE TERMINAL ILLNESS OF A LOVED ONE (VT222)
This video helps viewers acknowledge their emotions about the terminal illness of someone they love, and guides them in living fully with their loved ones through the last months, weeks, or days of their time together. A guide is included.   Age: A.   35 min.  

PEACEFUL JOURNEYS: CARING (VT2830)  
Prayer and compassion feed on each other. Without prayer, compassion can lead to an undisciplined form of activism. Without compassion our prayer can become a narrow form of 'quietism'. In this video, basic elements of healthy caring are reviewed and illustrated.   Age: A.   25 min.  

PEACEFUL JOURNEYS: NURTURING (VT2831)  
Spiritual boredom is one of the greatest enemies of the spiritual life. Even a very busy person with many challenges in life can suffer from it. By knowing how to nurture our inner lives we can avoid unnecessary spiritual and psychological problems. The grief process for teens is punctuated by all the conflicts and questions and realizations of the teen years. This program helps teens and those who minister with them to understand the grief process through the testimonies of young people who have walked through it, and offers hope for healing and growth. THE HEART OF HEALING PRAYER (VT5129)
The Heart of Healing Ministry
reminds and invites viewers to the high calling of healing ministry. The church is beginning to reclaim its healing ministry.
